Not much known about the early history of these islands. The islands, which have been inhabited apparently the first to have
Amini, Andrott, Kavaratti and Agatti. It has previously been suggested that the islanders were originally Hindus, and later
converted to Islam under the influence of Arab traders, sometime in the 14th Century. But Archeological excavations show
evidence that Buddhist settlements around the 6th or 7 Century. Earliest Muslim converts or settlers before the year 139 AH
of the Hijra year (), eighth century, were discovered recently in what period of tombstones Agatti. This would tend to
confirm the traditional belief that Islam was on the island by Arab Saint, Ubaidulla in 41 AH.Probably independent until 16
